Location of Coin on the Costa del Sol

coin: an inland oasis ON THE COSTA DEL SOL

Coín is one of the many up and coming villages located inland yet still remaining close to the Costa del Sol. It is only about a 30 minute drive to the costal resort of Fuengirola. Coín has been showing rapid expansion in recent times, and the village is quickly becoming a year round place of residence for many foreigners, not to mention a hotspot for real estate investment.

The history of Coín is an interesting one, having been established well before the Roman occupation. It was once a Roman market centre for the wealth of marble contained in the surrounding hills. Now its primary industry is agriculture and it boasts some of Malaga’s most fertile land, attractively covered with acres of citrus and almond groves as well as cork and pine forests.

The village has retained much of its Spanish charm and features a series of picturesque churches and many beautiful fountains can be found in its narrow maze of streets.

Even though Coín is set just slightly inland, it still attracts many tourists looking for a balance of being close enough to the beach but also just away from the activity of the coastline. English is widely spoken but if you are looking to relocate to Spain full time then it would be useful to pick up some Spanish so that you can communicate with all of your neighbours. If you are learning Spanish then you should also find ample opportunity to practise your language skills.

Location of the Coín on the Costa del Sol

Located just a few miles inland from the coast, Coín lies in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range. It has a progressive feel compared to many of the other villages of its size and character, and is in an ideal location, off the beaten track but still nearby the centre of this fun and exciting section of Spain’s coastline.

Situated just a little more than twenty minutes drive from Marbella, Mijas, Cártama, and Alhaurin el Grande, there is practically no place you cannot access along the Costa del Sol from Coín. Although Coín is located inland, it is not so far from the coast that it does not benefit from the mild Mediterranean climate of the area, Coín is something if an inland oasis. For those who also enjoy peaceful breaks away, Coín offers a perfect blend of luscious green scenery, tranquility and lots of wildlife to enjoy, but in the warmer climate of Southern Spain.

While situated no more than a half an hour from Málaga’s international airport with newly opened terminal in March 2010 and the coastal enclave of Fuengirola, Coín remains a rural hideaway defined by its agricultural heritage.

Living and Working in the Coin area

The Costa del Sol economy relies heavily on the tourist industry and therefore much of the work available in the area may be seasonal and dependent on visitors to the area. That said, as the Costa del Sol is a favourite UK holiday destination then much of the employment sector can be said to be English speaking. In this way, if you have a family or baby in Spain and have not yet had the chance to brush up on your Spanish language skills, you shouldn't have many problems.

If you happen to be looking for work in the Coin area of the Costa del Sol then it would be worth your while checking out local resources such as job websites, local press and advertising to know of anything that comes up. To be able to work in Spain as an EU national you need an NIE and a Social Security number which you can find out more about from the local town hall in the area.
